iPhone Duo Creates Fresh Rivalry Between Apple and Samsung as Social Media Battle Erupts

Apple’s first foldable iPhone has finally arrived, and Samsung wasted almost no time reminding everyone that it has been playing this game for years.

The launch of the iPhone Duo has reignited the long-running Apple-Samsung rivalry, but this time the battle isn’t just about hardware.

Within minutes of Apple’s September 9 event, Samsung’s US social-media team began firing off posts aimed directly at Apple’s new foldable, turning the launch into an entertaining online showdown.

Samsung’s message was pretty clear: Apple may have just entered the foldable market, but Samsung has been here since 2019.

Samsung Wastes No Time Taking Shots at Apple

Samsung started its trolling campaign before Apple even unveiled the iPhone Duo.

As Apple went through its iPhone 18 Pro announcements, Samsung Mobile US posted “So far, so same” on X alongside its usual #ItsTimeToSwitch hashtag.

It later compared Apple’s updates to a Sims sequel, suggesting that the new iPhone didn’t bring enough that was genuinely new.

But Samsung was clearly saving its best material for Apple’s biggest announcement.

As the event moved toward the foldable iPhone reveal, Samsung posted: “Making us wait? Fine. We’ll be over here, folding 3 ways.”

The reference was aimed at Samsung’s own tri-fold smartphone, giving the company an opportunity to remind everyone that its foldable lineup has already expanded beyond the traditional book-style design.

Then Apple finally unveiled the iPhone Duo. Samsung’s response was even more direct. “Let us know when you’re done reheating our leftovers.”

And that pretty much summed up Samsung’s argument.

The “Leftovers” Joke Has a Point

As brutal as the post was, Samsung does have some history behind the joke.

Samsung launched the original Galaxy Fold in 2019. Apple has only now entered the category with the iPhone Duo.

That means Samsung has spent roughly seven years developing, selling, and refining foldable smartphones before Apple showed up.

Samsung clearly wants consumers to see the iPhone Duo as Apple finally catching up rather than Apple reinventing the category.

The company has already gone through several generations of foldables, while Apple gets to enter after seeing what worked and what didn’t for its competitors.

That makes Samsung’s confidence understandable. But Apple has its own argument.

Apple Says Its Foldable Is Different

Apple didn’t exactly enter the foldable market quietly.

During the launch, Apple positioned the iPhone Duo as a fundamentally different take on foldables, arguing that existing devices can feel like two phones awkwardly stuck together.

The company focused heavily on the Duo’s proportions, hinge, displays, and software experience, claiming that it was designed to provide a larger screen without the compromises Apple believes are common on existing foldables.

The iPhone Duo opens into a 7.6-inch display and has a 5.4-inch outer screen. Apple is also emphasizing the reduced visibility of the crease and an iOS experience designed around the larger display.

So Apple’s argument is this: Yes, Samsung got there first. But Apple believes it can do it better.

And that’s where this rivalry gets interesting.

Then Duolingo Joined the Fight

Duolingo takes a Jab at apple for iPhone Duo

Samsung wasn’t the only company having fun with Apple’s launch.

The name iPhone Duo immediately gave Duolingo an opening.

The language-learning company’s famous mascot is also named Duo, and it didn’t waste the opportunity.

Duolingo posted a cheeky reaction to Apple’s announcement, joking about the company naming a phone after its mascot and making it fold.

Samsung then joined the conversation, replying that Apple had copied them too and expressing “solidarity” with Duolingo.

Duolingo later responded with another joke, effectively turning the whole thing into a mini social-media pile-on around Apple’s new phone.

It was exactly the kind of chaotic brand interaction that makes major smartphone launches feel like internet events rather than simple product announcements.

The Internet Had Plenty to Say Too

Samsung’s posts were only part of the reaction.

The iPhone Duo quickly became a meme target, particularly because of its ₹2,99,900 starting price in India.

Social-media users reacted to the cost with jokes and memes, while others debated whether Apple’s first foldable actually justified such a premium.

There were also mixed reactions to the design.

Some users were impressed by Apple’s take on the foldable form factor, while others criticized the Duo’s proportions and questioned how comfortable it would be to use compared with a conventional smartphone.

That split is probably exactly what Apple wants at this stage. People are talking about it.

Samsung vs Apple Is Getting Interesting Again

The funny thing about Samsung’s reaction is that it also shows how important Apple’s entry could be for the entire foldable market.

Samsung has spent years trying to convince consumers that foldables are worth buying. Apple now has the brand power to potentially take that message to millions of people who never considered a foldable before.

That makes the iPhone Duo both a threat and a validation of Samsung’s strategy.

If the Duo succeeds, Apple could take a significant chunk of Samsung’s premium foldable audience. But if the Duo struggles, Samsung gets to say that its years of experience were right all along.

Either way, Samsung clearly isn’t treating Apple’s entry as irrelevant.

This Is More Than Just Another Roast

Samsung’s social-media posts are funny, but underneath the jokes is a serious competitive battle.

Apple has entered a category that Samsung helped establish. Samsung now has to defend its position against the world’s most valuable consumer technology brand.

Meanwhile, Apple has to prove that its first-generation foldable can compete with a category leader that has already gone through multiple generations.

And unlike previous Apple-Samsung battles, this one comes with a completely different dynamic.

Samsung can say Apple is late. Apple can say Samsung spent years perfecting a category that Apple can now make mainstream.

The next few months will show which argument consumers actually believe.

For now, though, Samsung has made one thing very clear: The foldable iPhone has arrived, and Samsung is absolutely ready to fight.
