Nintendo may already be exploring a premium OLED version of the Switch 2, but bringing it to market could prove more difficult than many fans expected.
According to a new report, the company is evaluating an upgraded handheld display, though increasing hardware costs and concerns over pricing are reportedly preventing Nintendo from making a final decision.
With the standard Switch 2 already becoming more expensive in several regions, the arrival of an OLED model could push the console into an even higher price bracket.
Nintendo Is Reportedly Looking at an OLED Upgrade
According to ZDNet Korea, Nintendo is considering a Switch 2 OLED model featuring a Full HD (1920×1080) OLED display instead of the LCD panel used in the current Switch 2.
The report claims that if the project receives final approval, development could begin later this year, while mass production may not start until late 2027 or early 2028.
The report also notes that Nintendo is evaluating a rigid OLED panel but has yet to commit to production because of the additional manufacturing costs compared to LCD technology.
As of now, Nintendo has not officially confirmed that a Switch 2 OLED is in development.
Price Is the Biggest Concern
The biggest obstacle appears to be affordability.
OLED displays cost more to manufacture than LCD panels, and Nintendo is reportedly concerned that adding one to the Switch 2 could make the console too expensive for its target audience.
Those concerns come at a time when hardware costs across the gaming industry continue to rise, with Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft all facing increasing component prices and changing market conditions.
Nintendo has already acknowledged that higher console prices create a larger barrier for consumers considering a purchase, although the company believes compelling games and exclusive experiences remain the biggest selling point for its hardware.
The Switch 2 Has Already Become More Expensive
The timing of these reports is particularly noteworthy because Nintendo has already announced a price increase for the Switch 2 in several markets.
The company explained that rising memory costs, component prices, foreign exchange rates, and other economic factors made the adjustment necessary.
Nintendo also indicated it may respond flexibly to future market conditions if costs continue to increase.
If an OLED model eventually launches, it would almost certainly cost more than the standard Switch 2. It remains to be seen whether consumers would be willing to pay the premium.
