Nintendo Is Shutting Down Mario Kart Tour After Seven Years

Nintendo has officially announced that Mario Kart Tour will shut down later this year, bringing an end to one of its most successful mobile games.

The game’s online service will end on September 29, 2026, at 11:00 PM PT (September 30 in most other regions), after which it will no longer be playable.

Nintendo has also confirmed that there are no plans to release an offline version, meaning the game will disappear entirely once the servers go offline.

The Finish Line for Mario Kart Tour

Launched on iOS and Android in September 2019, Mario Kart Tour brought Nintendo’s iconic kart racing series to mobile devices with touchscreen controls, seasonal tours, collectible drivers, karts, and gliders inspired by cities around the world and classic Mario locations.

The title quickly became one of Nintendo’s biggest mobile releases, attracting millions of players during its first weeks and receiving years of regular content updates.

However, active development effectively came to an end in October 2023, when Nintendo stopped introducing new tracks, characters, and karts.

Since then, the game has continued by recycling previous tours and events while the company shifted its focus to newer Mario Kart projects.

Rubies Sales Have Already Ended

Alongside the shutdown announcement, Nintendo has discontinued sales of Rubies, the game’s premium currency.

You can still use any Rubies you already own before the servers close, but no new purchases can be made. Once the shutdown date arrives, all online functionality and game access will end permanently.

No Offline Version Planned

Unlike Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, which received a standalone “Complete” edition after its online service ended, Nintendo says Mario Kart Tour will not receive an offline replacement.

This means player progress, collections, and purchased content will no longer be accessible once the servers are switched off.

For longtime players who have spent years collecting rare drivers, special karts, and seasonal cosmetics, the announcement marks the end of an era for Nintendo’s mobile gaming efforts.

Why Nintendo Is Moving On

The decision is not entirely surprising. Nintendo has gradually shifted its attention away from the mobile title.

With Mario Kart World now serving as the newest flagship entry in the franchise and much of Mario Kart Tour’s original content having already been adapted into Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s Booster Course Pass,

The company has maintained the game for nearly three years after ending new content, giving us plenty of time to revisit past tours before announcing the final shutdown.

A Significant Chapter in Nintendo’s Mobile History

Mario Kart Tour played an important role in Nintendo’s mobile strategy.

It introduced the Mario Kart series to smartphones, experimented with live-service events, and evolved considerably over its lifespan by removing controversial gacha mechanics, adding multiplayer support, and introducing new ways to unlock characters and vehicles.

While opinions on its gameplay differed from traditional Mario Kart titles, the game built a dedicated community over seven years and remained one of Nintendo’s most recognizable mobile experiences.

When the servers go offline on September 30, 2026, Mario Kart Tour will officially cross the finish line, closing the book on a major chapter in Nintendo’s mobile gaming history.
