The City of Dalaran is one of the new dungeons introduced in World of Warcraft: Forever.
It takes you into the famous mage city in the Alterac Mountains. This dungeon explores the city during a period of magical chaos, with malfunctioning constructs, dangerous arcane creatures, and powerful enemies roaming its streets.
The Dungeon is designed for five-player groups, and it offers multiple encounters, optional bosses, quests, and valuable equipment.
However, reaching the dungeon requires some preparation and obtaining the Dalaran Sewer Key.
This guide covers the City of Dalaran’s location, entrance requirements, attunement quests, bosses, and everything you need to know before starting your run.

Where to Find the City of Dalaran Dungeon
The City of Dalaran dungeon is located in the Alterac Mountains in the Eastern Kingdoms.
The dungeon entrance is situated near the sewer system on the northwestern side of the city.
The dungeon is divided into two main sections. You begin in the Dalaran Sewers before making your way into the actual city, where most of the encounters take place.
It is recommended to have a group around level 30 or higher to make the encounters more manageable.
How to Unlock the City of Dalaran Dungeon
Before entering the dungeon, you need to understand the access requirements for your faction.
Alliance and Horde players have different questlines to follow, although both eventually lead to the same dungeon.
Alliance Attunement
Alliance players can begin the process by visiting Emissary Jacques in Southshore, Hillsbrad Foothills.
Accept the quest An Alarming Request and follow the instructions to reach the Image of Archmage Modera outside Dalaran.
Modera provides the Heart of Disruption quest, which requires you to enter the dungeon and collect an Arcane Mote. The quest also provides the Dalaran Sewer Key.
Alliance players can access the city through its interior, so obtaining the key is not strictly necessary for entering through that route. However, having it makes accessing the dungeon entrance easier.
Horde Attunement
Horde players have a longer questline to complete before gaining access to the dungeon. Start by visiting Magus Wordeen Voidglare in Tarren Mill, Hillsbrad Foothills.
You need to complete the following quests:
- Key to the City: Begin the process of obtaining the key required to enter Dalaran.
- Prison Break-In: Find the traitors and recover their artifacts. This quest can be completed alongside Key to the City.
- Dalaran Patrols: Kill six Dalaran Summoners and 12 Elemental Slaves before returning to Magus Wordeen Voidglare.
- Blood in the Streets: Deliver the report to the Image of Archmage Modera outside Dalaran.
- Heart of Disruption: Enter the dungeon and collect the Arcane Mote to complete the final step and obtain the Dalaran Sewer Key.
Once you have the key, you can enter through the designated sewer entrance.
You do not necessarily need every party member to complete the questline, as one player with the key can unlock the entrance for the group.
Best Party Composition for City of Dalaran
The City of Dalaran is designed for a five-player group. A traditional party consisting of one tank, one healer, and three damage dealers works well.
However, this dungeon has several encounters that require you to interrupt enemy abilities, remove debuffs, and manage incoming magical damage.
Having a class capable of dispelling curses and magic effects is useful.
You should also bring enough mana-restoring consumables, as some encounters drain mana from the entire party.
One important thing to remember is that many enemies in this dungeon deal Arcane damage, including some of their melee attacks.
This makes certain defensive abilities less effective than they would be against regular physical attacks.
All Bosses in City of Dalaran and How to Defeat Them
There are eight boss encounters in the City of Dalaran, including one optional secret boss. Each encounter introduces different mechanics, so you should understand what to expect before engaging.
1. Atrexis the Grave Knight
Atrexis the Grave Knight is the first major boss players encounter inside the Dalaran Sewers.
He patrols alongside three Kirin Tor Necromancers. So, it’s important to clear some of the surrounding enemies before starting the fight.
Atrexis can summon skeletons using Raise Dead and strengthen himself and nearby enemies with Unholy Frenzy. He also uses Disarm against his primary target, along with powerful melee attacks.
The tank should maintain control of the boss while the damage dealers eliminate the skeletons that appear during the encounter.
Avoid using heavy area-of-effect attacks before the tank establishes sufficient threat, as the additional enemies can quickly overwhelm the group.
Strategy: Clear nearby necromancers where possible, control the skeletons, and focus on Atrexis once the tank has established control.
2. Lyn the Ignored (Optional Boss)
Lyn the Ignored is a secret boss that you can summon inside the Dalaran Sewers. Unlike the other encounters, this boss requires a special item called the Tome of Dalaran.
To obtain it, visit Shadowfang Keep and defeat Archmage Arugal. You can find a Black Tome on the table near his position after the encounter.
Take the Black Tome to Ambermill in Silverpine Forest and use it near the Ambermill Leyline Focus inside the town hall. This transforms it into the Tome of Dalaran.
Once you have the item, return to the City of Dalaran dungeon.
After defeating Atrexis, continue through the sewer passage towards the purple runes near the docks. Interact with the runes while using the Tome of Dalaran to summon Lyn.
Lyn uses Shadow Bolt Volley to damage the entire party and can summon skeletons during the fight.
He also applies Curse of Thorns to the tank, causing damage whenever the affected player attacks.
Strategy: Keep the party’s health topped up to survive Shadow Bolt Volley, eliminate skeletons, and remove Curse of Thorns as quickly as possible.
3. Arcane Anomaly
Arcane Anomaly is located in Krasus Landing after you reach the surface section of Dalaran.
The boss uses Arcane Bolt against the tank and has a dangerous ability called Focal Blast. This attack creates a rotating arcane beam that moves around the encounter area.
You must pay attention to the direction of the beam and move accordingly. Getting caught in its path can cause massive damage and potentially kill a character.
The boss also summons additional enemies around the edges of the room, so you should avoid moving too far away from the central area.
Strategy: Watch the direction of Focal Blast, stay near the centre of the encounter area, and interrupt Arcane Bolt whenever possible.
4. Arcanic Enigma
Arcanic Enigma patrols the garden area near the southern bank of Dalaran. The boss is accompanied by two Mana Phantoms, which should be your priority.
These enemies use Mana Burn, an ability that drains mana from their targets. Interrupt or stun them before they can repeatedly use this attack.
Arcanic Enigma also has several abilities of its own. Manamorph transforms a random player into a different form, preventing them from participating in the fight until the effect is removed.
The boss can also silence players standing too close and periodically summon Manalings.
Strategy: Eliminate the two Mana Phantoms first, remove Manamorph using a magic dispel, and have ranged players maintain their distance to avoid the silence.
5. Unstable Sentinel
Unstable Sentinel is located in Dalaran’s trade area, near the profession buildings.
Before starting the encounter, clear the surrounding Angry Tomes that spawn from nearby buildings.
The boss has two important abilities. Arcing Smash is a frontal attack that damages everyone standing in front of it, while Malfunction creates a powerful area-of-effect attack.
The tank should position Unstable Sentinel away from the rest of the group to prevent Arcing Smash from hitting other players.
When the boss begins casting Malfunction, melee players should move away immediately.
Ranged damage dealers and healers can avoid much of this damage by maintaining their distance.
Strategy: Keep the boss facing away from the party and move out of its range whenever it begins casting Malfunction.
6. Fel Ancient
Fel Ancient is found in the central section of Dalaran. However, you cannot immediately engage the boss because its area is protected by magical barriers.
Speak with Grindle Firespark to remove the barriers and make the encounter available.
The fight revolves around two abilities: Entangle and Fel Timbers.
Entangle roots two players for approximately 10 seconds while dealing damage over time. Fel Timbers creates dangerous green pools on the ground that damage anyone standing inside them.
The combination of these abilities can be particularly dangerous. A player who gets rooted inside a green pool can lose a significant amount of health before the effect expires.
Strategy: Move away from the green pools as soon as they appear. Save abilities such as Blessing of Freedom or Escape Artist to remove Entangle when necessary.
7. Mana Devourer
Mana Devourer is located near the Violet Hold area of Dalaran. Before starting the fight, clear all the surrounding enemies because they will join the encounter if left alive.
This boss is dangerous for groups that rely heavily on mana, as it continuously drains the party’s resources.
Its most important ability is Debilitate, which damages every player within range and drains 200 mana from each party member.
It also uses Drain Vitality against its primary target, dealing Arcane damage over time.
The longer the encounter continues, the harder it becomes for the healer to keep everyone alive.
Strategy: Clear the entire room before engaging Mana Devourer and focus on dealing as much damage as possible. Avoid wasting mana on unnecessary abilities so the group can finish the encounter before running out of resources.
8. Shade of the Archmage (Final Boss)
Shade of the Archmage is the final boss of the City of Dalaran dungeon. To reach the encounter, you must speak with Archmage Modera near the Violet Citadel and use the portal that opens access to the Purple Parlor.
The Shade deals heavy Arcane damage and has several abilities that require the party to remain alert.
Bounding Mana creates a magical projectile that travels outward before returning to its original position. You should watch its movement and avoid getting hit.
The boss also uses Arcane Explosion, which damages anyone standing within 20 yards.
Ranged players and healers should maintain their distance to avoid unnecessary damage.
One of the most interesting mechanics occurs when the Shade runs out of mana. It casts Mass Polymorph on the entire party before using Evocation to restore its mana. Once the transformation ends, the fight resumes.
Strategy: Keep ranged players spread out, avoid Bounding Mana, and maintain enough distance to escape Arcane Explosion. The healer should also prepare for the Mass Polymorph phase and be ready to restore the party’s health when the fight resumes.
