CD Projekt Red has officially announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, a brand-new story expansion arriving in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
The reveal comes nearly 11 years after the original release of The Witcher 3 and marks the first major expansion for the beloved RPG since Blood and Wine launched back in 2016.
The announcement instantly reignited excitement across the gaming community, with fans eager to return to Geralt’s world once again.
Developed Alongside Fool’s Theory
According to CD Projekt Red, Songs of the Past is being co-developed alongside Fool’s Theory, a Polish studio made up of developers who previously worked on The Witcher 3. The studio is also currently involved with the upcoming remake of the original The Witcher.
While story details remain tightly under wraps, CD Projekt confirmed that players will once again step into the role of Geralt of Rivia for a completely new adventure.
The title itself has already sparked massive speculation online, with many fans believing the expansion could explore forgotten events from Geralt’s past or potentially serve as a bridge toward The Witcher 4.
Surprise Reveal Leaked Ahead of Schedule
The DLC was reportedly meant to be officially revealed during a planned REDstreams presentation. However, the announcement surfaced early after information unexpectedly appeared on CD Projekt’s RED Launcher, effectively forcing the studio to confirm the project ahead of schedule.
Despite the surprise reveal, the announcement has been met with overwhelming excitement. The Witcher 3 remains one of the most critically acclaimed RPGs ever made, with over 60 million copies sold worldwide and hundreds of Game of the Year awards earned since its launch in 2015.
Release Date
CD Projekt Red has confirmed that The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is scheduled to launch sometime in 2027. However, the studio has not revealed an exact release date yet.
According to the developers, more details about the expansion, including gameplay footage, story information, and potentially a launch window update, will be shared later in summer 2026.
Platforms and Other Details
CD Projekt Red also confirmed that Songs of the Past will only launch on current-generation hardware. As of now, the expansion is planned for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with no announcement regarding Nintendo Switch, PS4, or Xbox One versions.
Alongside the expansion, the studio is preparing technical updates for the base game on PC, including revised system requirements and continued DirectX 12 support.
Reports suggest future updates may also phase out support for older operating systems and traditional HDD storage.
More Information Expected Later This Year
More information about Songs of the Past, including gameplay footage and story details, is expected to be revealed later in summer 2026.
For longtime Witcher fans, the announcement feels almost surreal. Few expected Geralt to return for another full adventure after Blood and Wine was widely considered his farewell chapter. Now, more than a decade later, CD Projekt Red is once again opening the gates to the Continent.
