Yamato – World of Warships

Yamato is the legendary Tier X Japanese battleship and one of the most iconic ships in the entire game. Inspired by the real Imperial Japanese Navy super-battleship, it represents raw firepower above everything else. When people think of “big guns,” Yamato is basically the poster child.

At Tier X, it sits at the absolute top of the tech tree and is built around devastating long-range salvos. Unlike brawling-focused battleships, Yamato dominates from distance with unmatched penetration and alpha damage. If you want to delete ships from across the map, this is your ship.

Basic Details

  • Type: Battleship
  • Tier: X
  • Nation: Japan
  • Rarity: Tech Tree
  • Release: Since launch
  • Price Value: 249,000 XP and 20,600,000 Credits
  • Primary Role: Long-range heavy artillery platform with unmatched penetration power

Key Features

  • 9 × 460 mm Main Guns: The largest caliber guns in the game among tech-tree battleships. These guns can overmatch 32 mm armor plating, allowing Yamato to penetrate the bows of many high-tier battleships that would normally bounce other shells.
  • Exceptional Long-Range Accuracy: Japanese battleships are known for solid dispersion at range, and Yamato excels at landing consistent hits across the map.
  • Devastating Alpha Strike: A single well-placed salvo can remove huge chunks of HP, especially against cruisers showing broadside.
  • Strong Central Armor Belt: When angled properly, Yamato can tank effectively. However, her broadside is extremely vulnerable if exposed.
  • Large HP Pool: It has one of the highest health pools among Tier X battleships, allowing sustained frontline presence when positioned correctly.
  • Weak Close-Range Agility: Poor turning radius and slow rudder shift make it vulnerable to torpedoes and close-range flanking.
  • Large Citadel: Showing full broadside, especially at mid-range, can result in devastating counter-fire.

How to Obtain the Yamato

Yamato is a researchable Tier X Japanese battleship in the tech tree. To unlock it, you must progress through the Japanese battleship line and research Izumo at Tier IX.

Once researched, Yamato can be purchased using Credits. It does not require Doubloons, Coal, Steel, or other special currencies. Permanent camouflage and economic bonuses may be available separately in the Armory.

Tips to Play Yamato

Yamato thrives at medium to long range. Position yourself where you can create crossfires and punish enemies, showing even slight angles. Thanks to its 460 mm guns, you can overmatch many bow-in battleships, meaning you don’t always need a full broadside to deal serious damage.

Avoid overextending early. Its size and limited mobility make disengaging difficult once committed. Let the battle develop before pushing forward.

Angle carefully. While it has strong armor, its citadel is vulnerable if you expose too much of its side. Controlled angling combined with disciplined positioning turns it into a damage-dealing fortress.

Late game is where Yamato becomes terrifying. With fewer ships on the map, crossfires become easier to create, and long-range accuracy allows it to close out matches decisively.

If your goal is pure artillery dominance and massive salvos that make cruisers reconsider their life choices, Yamato absolutely delivers.
