Guan Yu is one of the most popular legendary commanders in Rise of Kingdoms (ROK).
He is an infantry commander with two other specialties, Conquering and skill damage.
This is a full guide of Guan Yu which includes different Talent Trees for different scenarios, top commander Pairings, best equipment setup, and pretty much everything else related.

Skill upgrade order
5-1-5-5
Guan Yu’s second skill is only useful in rally situations. His expertise is a little tricky.
if you plan to use secondary commanders who can provide a shield(example: Alexander), then it is worth unlocking; otherwise, it becomes quite useless.
Pros
- Very High Active skill damage
- Powerful AOE Damage
- Debuff and Silence abilities
- Good march Speed for inf commander
- Healing Factor
- Versatile enough to pair with many commanders
Cons
- Can only be used as a primary commander
- New archer commanders counter him very well
Guan Yu Talent Tree builds
These are a few suggested Guan Yu Talent Tree builds for open fields and rallies.
Open field – option 1

You can use this build for murder ball during ruins and alter. This talent tree focuses on doing sustained damage and staying longer periods on the field.
Open field – option 2

Option 2 is Focused on skill damage suitable for nuking. If you like to do big damage with one skill cycle and then retreat back then this build will fulfill your needs.
Rally

In the current meta, Pakal is being used for infantry rallies. However, if you don’t have him, Guan is your best option. This is the talent tree you should be using in a rally situation.
Guan Yu Commander Pairings
Since active skill damage gets reduced when Guan is being used as secondary, it makes more sense to use him as primary commander only.
There are several commanders that can be used as a secondary commander to Guan.
- Legendary Scipio Africanus – Leonidas used to be the best pair for Guan Yu; now that position is changed by the new infantry commander, Legendary Scipio Africanus. Both commanders complement each other nicely and do tons of damage together.
- Leonidas– Great AOE, survivability, and rage gain speed; lacks March speed
- Cheok Jun-gyeong– deals more damage than Leonidas but also takes more damage in return.
- Alexander the Great- Guan could be a little squishy, but Alex can provide Tankiness and March speed.
- Harald Sigurdsson – Good infantry rally option as secondary to Guan Yu
- Sun Tzu– free-to-play/low-budget option with good AOE skill damage output.
