With the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI getting closer, players are preparing for what could be one of the biggest game releases in history.
However, downloading a game of this scale on launch day could be a problem, especially if you have a slower internet connection.
Fortunately, Rockstar Games is making preloading available ahead of launch, to download GTA 6 before you can actually play it.
The company has also started revealing important details about the download, including its storage requirements and availability across platforms.
Here’s everything you need to know about GTA 6 preloading, including when you can download the game, how much storage space you need, and when the game becomes playable.
When Can You Preload GTA 6?
Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that GTA 6 will support preloading ahead of its November 19, 2026, release.
If you have purchased the digital version, you will be able to download the game before launch. This means you won’t have to wait for a potentially massive download to finish on release day.
However, the preload schedule has received an update, with different platforms receiving access at different times.
Rockstar has now revealed that GTA 6 preloading will begin on November 10, 2026, rather than the previously announced November 12 date.
PlayStation 5 players can start downloading at midnight in their local time zone, while Xbox Series X|S players can begin at 12 AM GMT.
This gives you nine days to get the game ready before its official release.
GTA 6 Preload Date and Time
The preload schedule differs slightly between PlayStation and Xbox. Here are the confirmed details:
| Platform | Preload date | Start time |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | November 10 | Midnight local time |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | November 10 | Midnight local time |
| Xbox Series X | November 10 | 12 AM GMT |
| Xbox Series S | November 10 | 12 AM GMT |
For players in India, the Xbox preload will begin at 5:30 AM IST on November 10.
PlayStation players can begin downloading at midnight local time on the same date.
Once the preload becomes available, players who have purchased the digital version should be able to download the game through their respective console storefronts.
GTA 6 Download Size: How Much Storage Space Do You Need?
One of the biggest questions surrounding GTA 6 has been its download size.
Considering the scale of Leonida, the detailed environments, the number of activities, and the overall ambition of Rockstar’s latest project, players were expecting a substantial download.
Rockstar has now confirmed that GTA 6 will require up to 212GB of storage space, depending on the device.
This is considerably larger than most modern AAA games and makes storage management an important aspect before downloading.
You should ideally have at least 212GB of free space available on your console before the preload begins.
Having some additional room is also sensible, particularly if future updates or additional game data require more storage.
The 212GB figure is the announced maximum requirement, so the actual download size may vary between platforms.
Does GTA 6 Have a Physical Disc Version?
There is an important detail you should know before purchasing a physical copy of GTA 6.
Despite being sold through traditional retail stores, the physical edition will not include an actual game disc.
Instead, the physical package will contain a digital download code that you can redeem through the console storefronts.
Once redeemed, the code allows you to download GTA 6 just like someone who purchased the digital edition.
This means physical buyers will also need an internet connection and sufficient storage space to download the entire game.
The code-in-box approach also means that purchasing a physical copy will not eliminate the lengthy download process.
How to Preload GTA 6
On PlayStation 5, you can check your Game Library and locate GTA 6 under your purchased games. Once the preload option becomes available, you can start downloading the game to your console.
Xbox Series X|S players can similarly visit their library or the Microsoft Store, locate their GTA 6 purchase, and begin the installation when preloading opens.
It is also worth checking that automatic downloads are enabled if you want the process to begin without manually starting it.
When Can You Actually Play GTA 6?
Preloading does not mean you will get early access to the game. Even after completing the download, GTA 6 will remain locked until its official release.
Rockstar Games has scheduled the launch for November 19, 2026. The game will become playable at midnight local time, meaning the exact unlock time will depend on your region.
Which Platforms Support GTA 6 Preloading?
GTA 6 is currently scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Both platforms will support preloading.
The game is also enhanced for PlayStation 5 Pro.
Rockstar has not announced a PC version of GTA 6. Consequently, PC players will have to wait for further information about a potential release on PC.
