In World of Warships, Surcouf stands out as one of the most unusual submarines ever introduced to the game. Inspired by the real-life French cruiser submarine, this Tier X premium vessel breaks traditional submarine expectations by blending heavy surface firepower with underwater capability.
Unlike conventional subs that rely primarily on stealth and homing torpedoes, Surcouf emphasizes aggressive surface engagement, featuring large-caliber main guns more commonly seen on cruisers.
Basic Details
- Type: Submarine
- Tier: X
- Nation: France
- Rarity: Legendary (Event-exclusive)
- Release: Update 15.0 – Salvage for Victory (January 2026)
- Price Value: 45,000 Doubloons
- Primary Role: Surface-focused raider with cruiser-caliber main guns and non-acoustic torpedoes
Key Features
- 203 mm Main Battery Guns: Equipped with a twin 203 mm turret, giving it cruiser-level firepower while surfaced. This allows it to deal significant damage with HE and AP shells.
- Surface-Focused Gameplay: Unlike most submarines, Surcouf performs best above water, using its guns and wide torpedo angles rather than relying solely on underwater ambush tactics.
- Forward and Stern Torpedoes: Features both bow and stern launchers, offering flexible attack angles. However, these are standard torpedoes, not acoustic homing types.
- Main Battery Reload Booster: A consumable that temporarily increases gun firing rate, allowing for burst damage potential in key engagements.
- Spotter Aircraft: An unusual feature for a submarine, extending firing range and improving long-range gun performance.
- Limited Submarine Utility: Lacks Hydrophone and acoustic torpedoes, making it less effective in traditional submarine duels compared to other Tier X subs.
How to Obtain Surcouf
The Surcouf in World of Warships is primarily obtained through a limited-time special event rather than a permanent shop listing. It was introduced during Update 15.0 as the final reward of the Salvage for Victory event.
During the event period, players were required to earn Progress Points by exchanging in-game resources such as Coal, economic bonuses, and other eligible items. Once the required milestone was reached, Surcouf became available to claim as the grand reward.
Although the ship carries an approximate base value of 45,000 Doubloons, it is not typically purchased directly for that amount. Instead, it is categorized as a Legendary, event-exclusive premium ship, meaning availability depends entirely on special event rotations or potential future re-releases by Wargaming.
If the event is not currently active, the ship cannot be obtained through standard in-game methods unless it returns in a future event or limited-time offer.

Tips to Play Surcouf
1. Treat It Like a Light Cruiser Early Game
At the start of the match, avoid diving immediately. Stay at medium range, use islands for cover, and farm damage with your 203 mm guns. You are more valuable dealing with consistent surface damage than sitting underwater doing nothing.
2. Pick Your Surfacing Moments Carefully
Your guns only work while surfaced, which also makes you fully visible. Never surface in open water without support. Time it when enemy ships are distracted, reloading, or focused elsewhere.
3. Use Reload Booster for Burst Windows
The Main Battery Reload Booster is your power spike. Activate it when a broadside cruiser is exposed or when you need to quickly finish a low-HP target. Don’t waste it on random long-range spam.
4. Torpedoes Are Your Backup Plan
Your torpedoes are strong but non-acoustic, meaning they require good prediction. Use them when enemies are pushing toward you or sailing predictably. The stern tubes are excellent for disengaging while still threatening pursuers.
5. Avoid Submarine Duels
Since you lack a hydrophone and homing torpedoes, you are not built for underwater knife fights. If another sub challenges you, reposition instead of forcing the engagement.
6. Positioning Is Everything
Surcouf is larger and less agile than most submarines. Plan your escape routes before committing to a push. If things go wrong, dive early rather than waiting until you’re already focused.
7. Mid–Late Game Is Your Power Phase
Once enemy numbers thin out, Surcouf becomes much stronger. With fewer ships spotting and focusing on you, it’s easier to surface, use your guns aggressively, and control flanks.
If played patiently and with good timing, Surcouf can feel incredibly rewarding. If played recklessly, it gets punished fast. It’s all about calculated aggression.
