After nearly a decade away from the spotlight, Star Fox has returned with a complete remake of the beloved Nintendo Star Fox 64.
Nintendo has focused on modernizing the elements that made the original so memorable: its fast-paced on-rails shooting, branching mission paths that change based on player performance, and the distinct personalities of the Star Fox team.
They have also updated visuals, smoother controls, expanded cutscenes, and online multiplayer features to make the experience feel fresh.
It is a visually stunning rail shooter that captures the magic of the original without losing its fast-paced arcade identity.
While it doesn’t completely escape the limitations of its source material, this is easily the strongest Star Fox game in years and a promising direction for the franchise.
A Familiar Journey Through the Lylat System
The story remains largely faithful to Star Fox 64. You once again take control of Fox McCloud as he leads the Star Fox team, Falco Lombardi, Slippy Toad, and Peppy Hare, on a mission to stop the evil Andross from conquering the Lylat System.
Although the overall narrative hasn’t changed dramatically, Nintendo has added new cinematic cutscenes, improved dialogue delivery, and expanded character interactions.
These additions give the crew far more personality than before and make the emotional moments more impactful without slowing down the action.
Gameplay Still Feels Great
The heart of Star Fox remains its thrilling on-rails space combat.
Flying the Arwing is incredibly smooth, with responsive controls that make dodging lasers, performing barrel rolls, and locking onto enemies satisfying from beginning to end.
Old fans will immediately feel at home, while newcomers will appreciate the modern control options, including mouse controls with the Joy-Con 2.
The branching level system also returns, with multiple playthroughs to unlock alternate missions, hidden bosses, and the true ending. It’s a design that still works remarkably well nearly three decades later.
However, the game’s biggest weakness is also inherited from the original. The campaign is relatively short, and so if you are expecting a lengthy adventure, you may be disappointed.
Fortunately, the branching routes and higher difficulty levels provide plenty of replay value.
A Visual Showcase for Nintendo Switch 2
If there’s one area where Star Fox truly shines, it’s the presentation.
Nintendo has transformed the colorful worlds of the original into gorgeous sci-fi environments filled with detailed planets, cinematic explosions, dynamic lighting, and impressive particle effects.
Every stage is handcrafted to showcase what the Nintendo Switch 2 can achieve.
The game consistently delivers spectacular set pieces that resemble scenes from a blockbuster science-fiction movie.
Whether you’re flying through asteroid fields, battling enormous space cruisers, or soaring across planetary landscapes, the visual quality remains consistently impressive.
Excellent Audio and Voice Acting
The soundtrack blends classic Star Fox themes with newly orchestrated arrangements that perfectly complement the action.
Voice acting has also received a significant upgrade. Fox, Falco, Slippy, and Peppy all sound more expressive than ever, helping strengthen the bond between the team throughout the campaign.
With excellent sound effects and satisfying weapon feedback, every dogfight feels exciting.
Multiplayer Adds More Value
Nintendo has expanded the multiplayer offering with online battles, cooperative gameplay, GameChat integration, and GameShare support.
While multiplayer isn’t deep enough to become the game’s main attraction, it provides a fun distraction once you’ve completed the campaign.
More maps and progression systems would have been welcome, but it’s still a worthwhile addition that extends the game’s lifespan.
What Could Have Been Better
Despite its strengths, Star Fox plays things a little too safely.
Many missions follow the exact structure of the Nintendo 64 original, meaning longtime fans won’t find many surprises.
Some enemy AI also feels dated compared to modern action games, and the campaign can be completed relatively quickly.
Nintendo has taken fewer creative risks, and the game is relying so heavily on nostalgia.
Verdict
Star Fox successfully revives one of Nintendo’s most beloved franchises by respecting its roots while giving it the visual and technical upgrades it deserves.
Its excellent flight controls, spectacular visuals, improved presentation, and enjoyable replayability make it one of the best showcases for the Nintendo Switch 2.
Although the campaign remains short and the remake doesn’t dramatically evolve the formula, the core gameplay is so entertaining that these shortcomings are easy to overlook.
After years of uncertainty, Fox McCloud is finally back in top form. Hopefully, Nintendo uses this successful remake as the foundation for an entirely new Star Fox adventure rather than another revisit of the past.
