The extraction genre has become one of the most competitive spaces in gaming, but Mistfall Hunter is taking a slightly different route.
Instead of building another military-style extraction shooter, Bellring Games has combined the high-risk loot-and-extract formula with Soulslike combat, RPG progression, and a dark fantasy setting.
It is a third-person PvPvE action RPG where you have to fight monsters, collect valuable equipment, battle other players, and, most importantly, make it out alive.
If you die before extracting, much of what you collected during the run is lost.
What Is Mistfall Hunter?
Mistfall Hunter is a third-person dark fantasy extraction ARPG set in a world called Weavereach.
The gods have fallen, the land has been consumed by the mysterious Gyldenmist, and humanity is struggling to survive.
You take the role of a Gyldhunter, venturing into corrupted areas to collect Gyldenblood and valuable equipment.
The ultimate objective is simple: get in, gather as much as possible, survive the monsters and rival hunters, and extract before it is too late.
The game supports solo play as well as squads of up to three players.
That combination gives Mistfall Hunter an interesting identity, because it isn’t simply a Soulslike with multiplayer elements or another extraction shooter with swords.
Its entire gameplay loop is built around the tension created by combining the two genres.
How Does the Extraction Gameplay Work?
The basic loop in Mistfall Hunter will be familiar to anyone who has played games such as Escape from Tarkov, Hunt: Showdown, or ARC Raiders, although the presentation and combat are very different.
You enter a dangerous area, search for resources and equipment, fight hostile creatures, and potentially encounter other players.
Every item you collect becomes more valuable as you progress through a run, but that also makes dying increasingly painful.
The important part is extraction. You need to locate an extraction opportunity and escape back to safety.
One of the game’s distinctive extraction mechanics involves the Soul of Return, a bell that can be used to escape the corrupted world.
Activating an extraction isn’t necessarily a quiet process, so other players may discover your position and turn an otherwise successful run into a desperate final battle.
This creates the central risk-versus-reward decision. Do you leave with what you already have, or continue exploring in the hope of finding something even better?
Soulslike Combat Meets Extraction
Combat is arguably the biggest reason Mistfall Hunter stands apart from the crowded extraction market.
Rather than using traditional gunplay, the game focuses on melee weapons, magic, ranged attacks, dodging, positioning, and class abilities.
The combat has clear Soulslike influences, but the developers have also designed it around third-person PvP encounters.
Timing and positioning matter heavily. You need to understand enemy attack patterns, manage their abilities, and avoid taking unnecessary damage because resources are limited during an expedition.
The combat system also makes encounters with other Gyldhunters particularly unpredictable.
A player who has spent most of a match fighting monsters may suddenly find themselves fighting another player who has been saving abilities specifically for PvP.
That creates a very different kind of tension compared with traditional extraction shooters.
Six Classes to Choose From
Mistfall Hunter currently features six playable classes, giving you different approaches to combat and team composition.
The Mercenary is the straightforward melee fighter, focusing on heavy weapons and close-range combat.
It is a natural choice for players who prefer to stay on the frontline and absorb punishment while dealing significant physical damage.
The Sorcerer takes the opposite approach, relying on elemental magic and ranged attacks. Fire, ice, and lightning abilities allow the class to control space and punish enemies from a distance.
The Blackarrow is built around ranged physical damage and stealth. The class uses a bow and can pressure enemies without necessarily committing to close combat.
The Shadowstrix is the assassin of the roster. It specializes in stealth, daggers, and burst damage. It’s particularly suited to players who enjoy approaching enemies from unexpected angles.
The Seer serves as the game’s support-focused class. Healing, curse removal, and supportive abilities make the Seer useful when playing as part of a squad.
The newest addition is the Withered Knight, which was introduced during the game’s open-beta period.
It focuses on crowd control and marking enemies with Withering Sigils before exploiting those marks to deal additional damage.
RPG Progression and Build Customization
The extraction loop is supported by a deeper RPG progression system. You can combine equipment, skills, and talents to create builds suited to your preferred playstyle.
This means two players using the same class don’t necessarily have to play identically. Gear and talent choices can influence how a character performs, and class abilities provide another layer of customization.
That progression is important because Mistfall Hunter isn’t simply about winning individual encounters.
Successful expeditions allow you to build your character and improve future chances of surviving more dangerous areas.
However, the system also means losing a run can hurt. The game deliberately makes you think about how much risk you are willing to accept before attempting extraction.
A Dark Fantasy World
Weavereach is a world already on the verge of collapse, with the mysterious Gyldenmist spreading across the land.
The game’s environments combine ruined settlements, corrupted landscapes, monsters, and supernatural elements to create an appropriately bleak atmosphere.
The story revolves around Dew, a mysterious girl who revives the player and sends them into this broken world.
The broader objective involves harvesting Gyldenblood and attempting to repair the shattered Web of Fate.
While the extraction gameplay is naturally the main attraction, the setting gives the repeated raids more context than simply entering another random map to collect loot.
Maps, Monsters and PvPvE Encounters
Mistfall Hunter isn’t only about fighting other players. The environments are filled with AI-controlled enemies and larger threats that can interfere with both PvE and PvP encounters.
That creates the game’s PvPvE structure. A battle against another player can be interrupted by a monster, while fighting a powerful creature can alert nearby players to your location.
The developers have also expanded the game with additional content. The Hallowgrove map and Withered Knight class were among the major additions introduced during testing.
The mixture of environmental threats and player encounters is particularly important because it prevents every match from becoming a straightforward PvP deathmatch.
Platforms and Release Date
Mistfall Hunter launched on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in July 2026.
Steam lists July 29 as its release date, while the developer’s launch timing was July 30 at 01:00 UTC, which means the calendar date can differ depending on region.
Xbox players also received the game through Game Pass at launch, making it significantly easier for subscribers to try the extraction RPG without purchasing it separately.
The PlayStation version supports PS5 and PS5 Pro, with online play requiring PS Plus.
Mistfall Hunter Has Already Reached 1 Million Players
The game’s early performance has been encouraging. Bellring Games announced in early August that more than 1 million players had entered Weavereach since launch.
That is a significant milestone for a new IP, particularly in an increasingly crowded extraction market.
However, the launch has not been completely smooth. Player feedback has highlighted issues including performance, stuttering, latency, matchmaking, and the game’s limited solo options.
The developers have acknowledged some of these concerns and have already outlined changes in the game’s first-season roadmap.
What’s Next for Mistfall Hunter?
Bellring Games is already working on post-launch content.
Season 1 is planned to introduce a new difficulty for Einherjar, seasonal tasks, an Underworld speed challenge, and additional encounters including the Golden Woodling. An Ancestor Tree event is also planned.
Perhaps more importantly for solo players, the developers have confirmed that Solo Mode for Brandrgarde’s Normal and Cataclysm difficulties is planned for September.
The developers have also indicated that future content will continue expanding the game’s arsenal and progression systems, with Season 2 expected to bring additions including a Javelin weapon and new progression mechanics.
Is Mistfall Hunter Worth Playing?
Mistfall Hunter is an interesting experiment because it takes two genres that aren’t normally associated with each other and puts them together.
The Soulslike combat gives its extraction gameplay a more physical, skill-based feel, while the extraction structure adds genuine consequences to every fight.
That combination won’t necessarily appeal to everyone. But if you are looking for a purely PvE Soulslike, you may find the PvP component frustrating, while traditional extraction-shooter fans may need time to adjust to melee-focused combat.
There are also clear areas for improvement. Players have pointed toward a somewhat overwhelming interface, limited map variety and performance problems, while comparisons to Dark Souls, Elden Ring and other established games highlight how much Mistfall Hunter still relies on familiar ideas.
But the core idea works. The possibility of losing a valuable haul makes even ordinary encounters feel meaningful, and the combination of classes, builds, monsters and rival players creates plenty of opportunities for unpredictable moments.
With more than 1 million players already joining the hunt, Mistfall Hunter has clearly found an audience.
The bigger question now is whether Bellring Games can turn that initial interest into a long-term community by improving stability, expanding the maps and continuing to give players reasons to return.
For fans of dark fantasy, Soulslike combat and extraction games, Mistfall Hunter is certainly one of the more unusual multiplayer RPGs to try right now.
