Ever since Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite failed to meet expectations in 2017, Marvel fans have been waiting for another great fighting game.
Instead of returning to Capcom, Marvel partnered with Arc System Works, the studio behind Guilty Gear Strive and Dragon Ball FighterZ.
On paper, it sounded like a dream collaboration. After spending time with Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, it’s clear that the gamble has paid off.
Rather than copying the Marvel vs. Capcom formula, Marvel Tokon creates its own identity.
It combines Arc System Works’ signature anime presentation with fast-paced tag mechanics and a surprisingly approachable combat system.
As a result, it is one of the strongest fighting game launches in recent years and arguably Marvel’s best standalone fighting game to date.
Stunning anime visuals with comic book personality
The first thing that grabs your attention is the presentation.
Arc System Works once again proves why it is among the industry’s best when it comes to anime-style visuals.
Every character looks hand-drawn despite running in Unreal Engine 5.
Explosions, Ultimate Skills, comic-inspired visual effects, and cinematic camera angles make every match look like a Marvel animated movie.
Unlike the realistic look of recent Marvel games, Marvel Tokon fully embraces a stylized art direction.
Iron Man’s energy blasts, Wolverine’s lightning-fast claw attacks, Storm’s weather effects, and Ghost Rider’s flaming chains all burst with personality.
Stages are equally impressive. Wall Break mechanics transition fights into entirely new areas, similar to Guilty Gear Strive, giving battles a cinematic flow and showcasing iconic Marvel locations.
The combat is deep
Many fighting games scare newcomers because every character has completely different inputs.
Marvel Tokon takes a different approach. Every character follows the same basic control philosophy.
Light, Medium, Heavy, Special, and Unique attacks remain consistent across the roster. So, it’s easy to switch between heroes without relearning the controls from scratch.
That doesn’t mean everyone feels the same. Each fighter has unique abilities that completely change their playstyle.
Wolverine excels at relentless close-range pressure, Storm controls space with aerial attacks, Doctor Doom dominates with projectiles, while Spider-Man relies on mobility and tricky mix-ups.
The standardized controls lower the skill floor, and advanced mechanics like assist timing, meter management, wall breaks, and extended air combos provide plenty of depth for competitive players.
It’s one of the smartest accessibility decisions Arc System Works has made.
The 4v4 system changes everything
Instead of following the traditional 2v2 or 3v3 formula seen in previous Marvel fighters, Marvel Tokon introduces a unique 4v4 team system.
At first, the concept sounds overwhelming. In practice, it’s surprisingly intuitive.
You begin battles with a primary fighter and limited assist options.
As the match progresses through damage and Wall Break events, more teammates become available, gradually unlocking your full squad.
This creates natural momentum shifts where matches become more chaotic and strategic as they continue.
Managing assists, tags, and Ultimate Skills creates exciting comeback opportunities.
Skilled players can chain multiple supers together, while casual players can still pull off flashy sequences without memorizing impossible execution.
The system is fresh enough to stand apart from Marvel vs. Capcom and still satisfying fans who enjoy tag-based combat.
A roster packed with personality
The launch roster features 20 playable characters spread across multiple Marvel teams, balancing iconic heroes with a few surprising choices.
Fan favorites like Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Storm and Doctor Doom are joined by characters such as Magik, Peni Parker, Robbie Reyes’ Ghost Rider, Ms. Marvel and Danger.
More importantly, everyone feels distinct. Arc System Works has done an excellent job translating comic-book abilities into gameplay mechanics instead of simply making every character punch harder or shoot bigger projectiles.
While some fans will inevitably wish for more X-Men, Avengers, or villains at launch, the existing roster offers enough variety to keep you experimenting for dozens of hours.
Story mode isn’t revolutionary, but it works
The story revolves around the mysterious Champion of the Universe forcing Earth’s greatest heroes and villains into a massive tournament.
Teams must fight through increasingly dangerous opponents to save the planet.
It’s a familiar fighting game setup, but Arc System Works spices things up with stylish presentation, entertaining character interactions, and plenty of fan service for Marvel comic readers.
No one is buying Marvel Tokon solely for its story, yet it succeeds in giving context to the battles while showcasing relationships between heroes and villains.
Online performance is excellent
Rollback netcode has become the gold standard for modern fighting games, and Marvel Tokon benefits greatly from it.
Online matches feel smooth even across longer distances, inputs remain responsive, and matchmaking is quick.
Cross-platform play between PlayStation 5 and PC also helps maintain a healthy player base from day one.
Ranked matches provide plenty of competitive tension, and casual lobbies and private rooms make it easy to play with friends.
For a tag fighter with so many visual effects happening simultaneously, network performance is remarkably stable.
Not everything lands perfectly
Despite being an excellent fighting game, Marvel Tokon isn’t flawless.
The biggest issue is complexity. While basic controls are beginner-friendly, mastering assist timing, combo routing, resource management, and team composition requires significant practice.
Casual players may initially feel overwhelmed once they venture into ranked play.
The launch roster, while solid, also feels slightly conservative for a Marvel game with decades of comic history.
Additional characters are already planned through DLC, but some fan favorites are noticeably absent at release.
Story mode, although enjoyable, is also fairly short compared to other major fighting games.
Performance
On PC, the game performs exceptionally well. Loading times are fast, frame rates remain stable during intense battles, and the visual effects never interfere with gameplay readability.
Arc System Works has clearly optimized Unreal Engine 5 for competitive play, where maintaining consistent performance is critical.
Final Verdict
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is exactly what Marvel fans have been hoping for over the past decade.
Arc System Works successfully blends accessible controls with incredibly deep mechanics, wraps everything in breathtaking anime-inspired visuals, and introduces a fresh 4v4 system that distinguishes it from other tag fighters instead of merely imitating them.
Whether you’re a longtime fighting game veteran or someone who simply wants to throw Wolverine against Iron Man in spectacular fashion, Marvel Tokon offers one of the most enjoyable superhero fighting experiences available today.
The roster will inevitably grow through future DLC, and the foundation is outstanding.
This is the strongest Marvel fighting game since the glory days of Marvel vs. Capcom, and perhaps the beginning of a brand-new legacy.
