Ghost of Yōtei was already one of the strongest open-world action games on PS5, so Sucker Punch had an interesting challenge with its Complete Edition.
Simply throwing the base game and some cosmetic extras into a new package would have been easy, but that is not what the studio has done.
The Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition adds a new story expansion called Echoes of Sekigahara, a new combat survival mode called Most Wanted, additional equipment, cosmetics, trophies, and all previously released content.
It also includes Ghost of Yōtei Legends, making this the definitive package for anyone who has yet to experience Atsu’s story.
The package feels surprisingly substantial, although the value proposition is very different depending on whether you are buying the game for the first time or upgrading from the original release.
What Does Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition Include?
The Complete Edition contains the full Ghost of Yōtei experience along with its additional content.
That includes the base game, Ghost of Yōtei Legends, the new Echoes of Sekigahara expansion, and the Most Wanted combat survival mode.
There are also several digital bonuses, including the In-game Mask, Charm of Hokkyokusei, Snake Armour, Digital Deluxe Armour Dye, Digital Deluxe Horse & Saddle, Sword Kit, Traveler’s Maps early unlock, and Charm of Amaterasu.
The limited-time Sakai Armour early unlock was also offered for purchases made by September 30, 2026.
The important additions, however, are Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted. Those are what separate this release from simply buying the original game with its existing DLC.
Echoes of Sekigahara
The biggest addition is Echoes of Sekigahara, a new narrative expansion that gives us another look at Atsu and her past.
The expansion moves between the present and flashbacks to Atsu’s time on mainland Japan.
The story introduces Nagato, a figure from Atsu’s past, and takes you to a previously unseen valley connected to the Snake and his Vipers.
The flashback sections allow the expansion to explore Atsu outside the context of her revenge journey.
Instead of simply sending her to another part of Ezo for another series of targets, Sucker Punch uses the expansion to add more context to the character.
The Battle of Sekigahara also plays an important role in the expansion and gives us a glimpse into a significant period of Atsu’s life before the events of the main game.
This is where Echoes of Sekigahara works best. It is not simply additional content for the sake of extending the playtime. It gives Atsu more room to develop and adds another layer to her story.
The expansion also introduces a new area, enemies, weapons, armour sets, and dyes. Some of the new equipment is useful, although it does not completely change the combat system.
That familiarity is probably the biggest weakness of the expansion. If you have already spent dozens of hours mastering Ghost of Yōtei, you will immediately understand how most of the new encounters work.
Still, the combination of the new location and story makes Echoes of Sekigahara a proper expansion rather than a collection of additional missions.
Most Wanted Is the Surprise Star
If Echoes of Sekigahara is the narrative reason to return to Ghost of Yōtei, Most Wanted is the reason to keep playing after finishing the story.
This is a new single-player combat survival mode that takes the game’s excellent combat and turns it into a roguelike-style experience.
You accept bounties and begin runs in which you fight increasingly difficult enemies.
Defeating enemies allows you to earn perks and unlock additional playable characters.
Atsu remains the dual-katana specialist, while other characters bring different weapons and combat styles. Oyuki, for example, specializes in the kusarigama, while Nagato uses a yari.
The format works because Ghost of Yōtei already has satisfying combat.
The survival structure gives you a reason to experiment with weapons and abilities in ways that the main campaign does not always encourage.
There is also a nice sense of progression between runs. You are not simply fighting waves of enemies for the sake of a high score; the mode gives you additional objectives, unlocks, and characters to work toward.
If you enjoyed the combat in Ghost of Yōtei, this could end up being the most replayable part of the Complete Edition.
Combat Still Feels Fantastic
The core combat has not suddenly been transformed, but it did not really need to be.
One of the strongest aspects of Ghost of Yōtei was always its weapon variety and responsive combat.
Atsu’s different weapons make encounters more flexible than the relatively straightforward sword-focused combat of Ghost of Tsushima. That foundation remains excellent in the Complete Edition.
The new content benefits heavily from this system because Most Wanted puts combat front and center.
Encounters can become chaotic quickly, forcing you to switch weapons, manage groups, and react to stronger enemies.
The downside is that veterans may notice how familiar some enemy archetypes and encounters feel.
The Complete Edition adds new content, but it does not fundamentally redesign the combat system.
That is not a major problem. When the underlying combat is this good, more opportunities to use it are welcome.
The World of Yōtei Still Looks Incredible
Visually, Ghost of Yōtei is one of the most impressive open-world games available on PS5.
The environments are a major part of the experience, with snowy landscapes, forests, mountains, villages, and changing weather creating an atmosphere that makes simply travelling through Ezo enjoyable.
The original game was already praised for its environmental design and dense open-world structure.
Its exploration, varied mission design, and ability to make the world feel more purposeful rather than simply filling it with generic activities.
The new expansion benefits from that same visual foundation. The new area does not feel like an afterthought, and the flashback sections provide some visual and narrative variety.
On PS5, performance is also quite strong.
Legends Makes the Package More Complete
Another major part of the Complete Edition is Ghost of Yōtei Legends.
This is the game’s online cooperative component, supporting up to four players and offering modes including Survival, Story, and Incursion.
For someone buying Ghost of Yōtei for the first time, having the multiplayer component included makes the Complete Edition feel much more comprehensive.
There is also additional post-launch content and quality-of-life improvements.
The October update introduced features such as the ability to keep one armour set’s appearance while using another set’s stats, alongside a new high-contrast accessibility option.
The free update also added Beauty of Yōtei and additional Watanabe Mode tracks for existing owners.
Importantly, not everything added with the October update requires purchasing the Complete Edition. That matters if you already own the original game.
Is the Complete Edition Worth It for New Players?
For someone who has never played Ghost of Yōtei, the Complete Edition makes a lot of sense.
You are getting the complete base game, the new expansion, the new survival mode, Legends, and the Digital Deluxe content in one package.
More importantly, you do not have to wonder which DLC you need to buy later.
You get the main campaign, multiplayer, additional story content, and the new combat mode from the beginning. If you were already planning to buy Ghost of Yōtei, this is the version to look at.
The amount of content is also important here. This is not simply a “Game of the Year Edition” where most of the value comes from a few cosmetic items.
Echoes of Sekigahara adds a new story experience, and Most Wanted provides a separate gameplay loop designed for repeated combat runs.
Is It Worth Upgrading?
This is where the situation becomes more complicated.
Existing owners can purchase the Complete Edition Upgrade for $19.99
At that price, the decision largely comes down to how much you enjoyed the original game.
If you finished Ghost of Yōtei and wanted more of Atsu’s story, Echoes of Sekigahara provides exactly that. And if you particularly enjoyed the combat, Most Wanted gives you a new reason to return to the game.
The upgrade is therefore much easier to justify for players who still have Ghost of Yōtei installed or have been waiting for substantial post-launch content.
On the other hand, players who have moved on completely and were satisfied with the original campaign may not find the new additions essential.
The Complete Edition does not fundamentally change the original game, and much of the combat and open-world structure will be immediately familiar.
What Could Have Been Better?
The biggest issue with the Complete Edition is that its new content does not completely escape the familiarity of the base game.
The new weapons and equipment are useful, but they are not revolutionary. Enemy and boss designs can also feel familiar to anyone who has already spent a significant amount of time in Ezo.
That means the expansion works best when it focuses on Atsu’s story and the new setting.
Most Wanted does a better job of providing something different because its survival structure changes how you approach the combat.
There is also an important distinction between new paid content and the free October update.
Existing players receive several quality-of-life features without buying the Complete Edition, including Beauty of Yōtei and the new Watanabe Mode tracks.
So, if you are upgrading, you are primarily paying for Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted, rather than the entire October update.
Final Verdict
Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition is a strong package and a particularly sensible starting point for anyone who has not played the game yet.
The original Ghost of Yōtei already had an excellent foundation, and the Complete Edition builds on it without unnecessarily changing what worked.
Echoes of Sekigahara provides a worthwhile continuation of Atsu’s story, while Most Wanted is a welcome addition for players who simply cannot get enough of the game’s combat.
The Complete Edition also benefits from having Legends and the Digital Deluxe content bundled into the package.
For new players, this is the version to buy. For existing owners, the upgrade is more dependent on how much you want additional Ghost of Yōtei content. I
f you enjoyed Atsu’s story and want more, the expansion gives you a good reason to return. If combat was your favorite part of the original, Most Wanted may be the bigger attraction.
