Echoes of Silenced Bells is one of the early side quests in The Blood of Dawnwalker, taking Coen and Anca to St. Tyna’s Convent.
What starts as a search for forbidden knowledge quickly turns into a fight through a convent filled with undead nuns, soldiers loyal to Brencis, and a dangerous boss hiding in the catacombs.
The quest also gives you a couple of different ways to reach the library, along with a choice at the end that affects what happens to the cursed nuns.

How To Start Echoes Of Silenced Bells
Echoes of Silenced Bells becomes available after completing the prologue, assuming Anca is still alive. You can find her at the Crossroads Inn, on the eastern side of the map.
Speak with Anca and agree to accompany her to St. Tyna’s Convent. The convent is located in the St. Tyna’s Grove region.
Once you arrive, follow Anca into the convent. Things don’t stay peaceful for long, as you’ll soon discover that the nuns have been transformed into undead creatures that repeatedly rise again.
After escaping the initial group, you’ll reach an area overlooking the convent courtyard. Your next objective is to find a way through the courtyard and get Anca safely to the library.
There are two main ways to do this.
How To Reach The Library
You can either:
- Find St. Tyna’s relic and deal with Brencis’ soldiers
- Use the convent’s bell tower to manipulate the undead nuns
You can actually explore both options before committing to one.
Option 1: Find St. Tyna’s Relic
This is the more direct route if you want to deal with the soldiers.
From the balcony, move toward the infirmary. Stay close to the wall and use the environment to avoid attracting the attention of the undead nuns.
Look for a window on the side of the infirmary. Interacting with it allows you to speak with some of Brencis’ soldiers, who are hiding inside.
They’ll offer you a deal: bring them St. Tyna’s relic, and they’ll help open the way toward the library.
Find The Monastery Keys
Head toward the groundskeeper’s shed near the church. Inside, you can find the keys you need to access the sacristy.
Be careful while moving around this area, as there are still undead nuns nearby.
Once you have the keys, head to the sacristy.
Inside, investigate the dead nun to obtain St. Tyna’s relic.
What Should You Do With The Relic?
You now have two choices.
Give the relic to the soldiers
Return to the soldiers and hand over the relic. They’ll give you access to the area and allow you to continue toward the library.
The downside is that you lose the relic.
Keep the relic
Alternatively, tell the soldiers you’ve changed your mind. They’ll turn hostile, forcing you to fight them.
Defeat the soldiers and loot their bodies to obtain the necessary key. You can then keep the relic for yourself.
This is arguably the better option if you want the additional equipment rather than simply taking the easy trade.
Option 2: Use The Bell Tower
The second method is much more interesting and lets you manipulate the undead nuns without giving up the relic.
First, find the Campana Loquitur book. It’s located inside a building near the sacristy.
The book explains the convent’s bell signals and, importantly, reveals that the undead nuns still follow the routines they had when they were alive.
Once you’ve read it, head to the bell tower.
You can access the tower using the monastery keys. During the night, there are also ways to approach it through the rooftops.
At the top of the tower, you’ll find the rope used to ring the different signals.
There are three useful signals:
- Dormitory signal – Moves the nuns toward the dormitory.
- Church signal – Moves the nuns into the church.
- Infirmary signal – Sends the nuns toward the infirmary.
The Best Bell Combination
If you’re looking to clear the courtyard with minimal trouble, use:
1. Infirmary signal
This sends the undead nuns toward the infirmary, where they attack and kill Brencis’ soldiers.
2. Church signal
Once the soldiers are dealt with, ring the church signal. The nuns move into the church, clearing the route through the courtyard.
You can then loot the soldiers and surrounding buildings before returning to Anca.
Tell Anca that the way is clear and proceed to the library.
Don’t Miss The Saint’s Tibia
Before leaving the courtyard area, there’s an important item worth picking up.
Look for the Saint’s Tibia on a corpse below a ladder in the western part of the area.
It’s connected to another quest later in the game, so grabbing it now can save you some backtracking.
Explore The Library And Catacombs
Once you’ve cleared the route, continue with Anca into the library.
The quest then takes you deeper into the convent as you search for forbidden books and information that could help against the Vrahkir.
Eventually, you’ll gain access to the convent crypt/catacombs.
Prepare for combat here. The enemies become more dangerous, and you’ll eventually encounter the quest’s boss.
How To Beat Leonica, She Who Speaks With The Devil
The final major encounter of Echoes of Silenced Bells is against Leonica, She Who Speaks With The Devil.
Leonica has several attacks that can punish you if you’re too aggressive.
One of her more annoying attacks is a spike burst, which requires good timing to dodge. She can also disappear during the fight and summon groups of undead nuns to attack you.
Leonica Boss Tips
Watch for unblockable attacks
Don’t try to parry everything. When Leonica uses an unblockable attack, prioritize getting out of the way.
Don’t ignore the summoned nuns
Leonica summons additional enemies as the fight progresses. Taking them out reduces the pressure and can give you opportunities to recover resources.
Use Witchcraft carefully
Witchcraft can be extremely useful, but it consumes blood. Don’t burn through your blood reserves unnecessarily.
Use Voracious Bite if available
Leonica is an undead enemy that can be used to replenish your health through Voracious Bite, while her summoned minions cannot be drained in the same way.
Defeating Leonica rewards you with Leonica’s Ring and the Unholy Vitality Manual, making the fight worthwhile even beyond simply progressing the quest.
Should You Burn The Notes Or Let Anca Try The Ritual?
After defeating Leonica, you’ll discover that things aren’t quite what they initially seemed.
Anca learns that Leonica was actually attempting to find a way to cure the cursed nuns. She wants to use Leonica’s notes to continue that work.
This leads to the quest’s biggest choice. You’ll eventually have to decide whether to:
- Burn the notes
- Give the notes to Anca
The earlier dialogue choices surrounding this decision don’t have a major impact. The important decision is whether you ultimately let Anca attempt the ritual.
If You Burn The Notes
If you choose to destroy the notes, Anca is understandably disappointed. However, there are no huge immediate consequences.
The undead nuns remain at the convent, and Anca doesn’t make additional deals in an attempt to save them.
If You Give The Notes To Anca
If you allow Anca to use Leonica’s research, she attempts to free the cursed nuns.
The ritual succeeds in freeing them from the convent, although Anca reveals that she had to make some additional unholy pacts to achieve it.
This choice can have implications for Anca’s later questline, but it doesn’t prevent you from continuing her story or pursuing her romance.
Which Choice Should You Pick?
If you’re purely looking for the best gameplay outcome, I’d recommend letting Anca use the notes.
You get to see the additional outcome of her research and free the nuns, while the choice doesn’t lock you out of her romance or immediately create a major negative consequence.
However, if you’re role-playing Coen as someone who doesn’t trust demonic bargains or doesn’t want Anca making more dangerous deals, burning the notes is a perfectly reasonable choice.
The important thing is that neither choice radically changes the main story. Anca’s questline continues either way, and the next quest, Between the Words, still becomes available.
Echoes Of Silenced Bells Quest Rewards
By completing the quest, you’ll get access to the next stage of Anca’s storyline and can obtain useful rewards during the convent and catacomb sections.
The rewards include:
- Leonica’s Ring
- Unholy Vitality Manual
- St. Tyna’s relic, if you choose to keep it
- Additional loot from the convent and Brencis’ soldiers
The quest also contributes to Anca’s larger questline, which eventually continues through Between the Words and later quests.
