EA Cancels Major Games, Shuts Down BioWare, and Restructures Its Studios

Electronic Arts is making some of its biggest changes in recent years, with multiple game cancellations, studio closures, and layoffs affecting several of its major franchises.

The most shocking development is the planned closure of BioWare, the legendary studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, alongside the cancellation of its next Mass Effect project.

The publisher announced its latest strategic changes on October 21, 2026, explaining that it wants to concentrate its resources on fewer, larger projects and franchises with greater growth potential.

The restructuring also affects The Sims and Skate, while other major projects, including Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game, remain in development.

Here are all the biggest EA game cancellations, studio closures, and other major changes.

All Major EA Game Cancellations and Studio Closures

1. Next Mass Effect Game

The next Mass Effect game is among the biggest casualties of EA’s latest restructuring.

BioWare had a small team working on the project in its early development stage, but EA has decided not to move forward with it.

The cancellation also accompanies the closure of BioWare’s Edmonton studio, bringing an end to the developer’s decades-long history as an independent creative team under EA.

The future of the franchise beyond this cancelled project remains unclear.

2. Project Lotus (The Sims)

EA has paused development on Project Lotus, an unannounced project associated with its The Sims franchise.

The move is part of a broader effort to concentrate resources on another initiative, internally known as Project Evergreen.

The company has not publicly provided a full explanation of Project Lotus’s original scope or confirmed every detail of its future.

It is therefore more accurate to describe the project as paused rather than definitively cancelled.

3. Black Panther

EA cancelled its planned Black Panther game in May 2025 and shut down Cliffhanger Games, the studio established in 2023 to develop it.

The single-player superhero game was intended to deliver a dedicated Black Panther experience.

Its cancellation was a major setback for Marvel fans, particularly because EA had previously announced a multi-game partnership with Marvel.

However, EA’s separate Marvel’s Iron Man game remains in development.

4. Titanfall Extraction Shooter

Respawn Entertainment reportedly had an early-stage Titanfall-related extraction shooter in development, known by the codename R7.

The project was reportedly among two incubation projects dropped during EA’s April 2025 restructuring.

The cancellation was reported by multiple gaming outlets, but EA did not publicly confirm all the reported details about the game’s identity.

This was not an announcement of a cancelled Titanfall 3, and you should not treat the two projects as the same game.

5. Respawn’s Star Wars FPS

EA cancelled a planned Star Wars first-person shooter in 2024 as part of a wider restructuring.

The project was associated with Respawn Entertainment and was separate from the studio’s Star Wars Jedi action-adventure series.

The decision came as EA reduced investment in certain projects and closed Ridgeline Games, while shifting resources towards established franchises.

The cancellation disappointed fans hoping for another original first-person shooter set in the Star Wars universe.

6. Ridgeline Games’ Single-Player Battlefield Project

EA cancelled a planned single-player Battlefield project in 2024 while shutting down Ridgeline Games, a studio established to work on the franchise’s narrative experiences.

Some Ridgeline employees were moved to other teams, but the original project did not continue as planned.

The cancellation marks a shift in EA’s development structure as it reorganised its Battlefield operations.

EA has continued investing in the franchise, including future titles following Battlefield 6.

EA Is Closing BioWare After More Than 30 Years

The cancellation of the next Mass Effect game is only part of the latest announcement. EA has also confirmed that it will close BioWare’s Edmonton studio and workspace.

Founded in 1995, BioWare became one of the best-known developers of story-driven role-playing games.

Its catalogue includes Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect. The studio was acquired by EA in 2007.

The closure represents a major change for EA’s role-playing game portfolio. BioWare’s recent releases, including Dragon Age: The Veilguard, faced commercial challenges, and the company is now choosing to focus its resources on fewer large-scale projects.

EA plans to cut approximately 400 jobs across the company, representing around 3% of its workforce. About 50 of those affected employees were reportedly at BioWare.

EA says it will support affected employees as they explore other opportunities within the company.

What Happens to EA’s Other Major Games?

Not every project is being cancelled. EA has outlined several franchises and upcoming games that remain priorities as part of its restructuring.

Game or franchiseCurrent status
Marvel’s Iron ManIn development
Next Star Wars Jedi gameIn development
BattlefieldFuture titles planned
Apex LegendsContinued investment planned
The Sims: Project EvergreenBeing prioritised
skate.Continues with a smaller team
Fight NightIn pre-production
Project GridironIn development

EA also announced plans for Respawn and DICE to collaborate on a future shooter project.

Some reports have speculated that it could be a new Star Wars: Battlefront game, but EA has not officially identified the project as Battlefront 3.

Why Is EA Cancelling So Many Games?

EA says it wants to focus on its strongest franchises and reduce the number of large-scale projects being developed simultaneously.

This approach is intended to direct more resources towards games with stronger commercial potential.

The wider industry is also facing rising development costs, increased competition for players’ attention, and pressure to make major releases financially sustainable.

EA’s restructuring follows its $55 billion acquisition by a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners, which was completed in August 2026.

However, the human cost of these decisions remains significant.

Developers lose their jobs, established studios disappear, and players are left wondering what might have been.

The cancellation of an early-stage game does not necessarily mean it was close to release, but the closure of a studio with BioWare’s history makes this restructuring particularly consequential.

EA’s latest restructuring is a major moment for the gaming industry.

The cancellation of the next Mass Effect game and the closure of BioWare are the biggest developments, while Black Panther, the reported Titanfall extraction shooter, and the cancelled Star Wars FPS show that the company has been cutting projects across multiple genres.

For now, EA is concentrating on franchises such as Battlefield, Apex Legends, The Sims, and EA Sports, alongside upcoming projects based on Iron Man and Star Wars Jedi.

Whether this narrower strategy produces stronger games remains to be seen. This article will be updated if EA announces further cancellations, studio closures, or changes to its upcoming games.
