The FIFA World Cup has returned, bringing with it the drama, heartbreak, and unforgettable moments that make football the world’s game. If you’re staying up late to watch every match and got caught up in World Cup fever, there’s no better time to watch football anime.
From realistic portrayals of elite competition to over-the-top super moves that would make even Lionel Messi jealous, anime has produced some incredible football stories over the years. Here are the best football anime to watch right now.
1. Blue Lock
The ultimate football anime of the modern era.
If you’ve spent any time online during the past few years, you’ve probably heard of Blue Lock. The series begins after Japan’s disappointing World Cup performance, leading to the creation of an extreme training program designed to produce the world’s greatest striker.
Unlike traditional sports anime that give importance to teamwork above all else, Blue Lock asks a provocative question: what if football needs more selfish superstars?
Packed with intense rivalries, psychological battles, and spectacular animation, Blue Lock is like a battle shonen disguised as a sports series. Every match becomes a life-or-death contest where players fight to avoid elimination.
Blue Lock is obsessed with the same goal every football nation dreams about: winning the World Cup.
2. Ao Ashi
The most realistic football anime ever made.
While Blue Lock focuses on strikers and ego, Ao Ashi takes a much more grounded approach. The story follows Ashito Aoi, a talented but raw young player who earns a chance to join a prestigious youth academy.
What makes Ao Ashi special is its attention to tactics. The series explores positioning, formations, vision, and the strategic side of football better than almost any sports anime before it.
The matches are authentic, the character growth is rewarding, and the series offers a fascinating look at how professional football academies develop future stars.
If you love the tactical side of football and want something closer to real-life competition.
3. Captain Tsubasa
The anime that inspired football legends.
No football anime list would be complete without Captain Tsubasa.
Originally debuting in the 1980s, the franchise became a cultural phenomenon and inspired generations of real-world football players. Stars such as Andrés Iniesta, Fernando Torres, and Alessandro Del Piero have spoken about its influence.
The series follows Tsubasa Ozora and his dream of becoming the world’s greatest football player. Matches are larger than life, shots seem capable of breaking physics, and football fields often feel several kilometers long.
The animation may show its age in older adaptations, but the passion and excitement remain timeless.
You should definitely watch this if you are interested in football anime history.
4. Giant Killing
The hidden gem every football fan should watch.
Most football anime focus on young players. Giant Killing takes a different approach by focusing on professional football.
The story centers on a struggling club and its unconventional manager, Tatsumi Takeshi, who attempts to turn the team’s fortunes around against much richer opponents.
The anime dives into coaching, club management, supporter culture, media pressure, and tactical adjustments. It feels closer to a football documentary than a traditional sports anime.
If you enjoy the managerial side of the game, Giant Killing is a must-watch.
It’s Best for Fans of tactics, coaching, and underdog stories.
5. Days
A classic underdog sports story.
Days follows Tsukushi Tsukamoto, a player who lacks natural talent but compensates with relentless determination.
The series is about friendship, teamwork, and personal growth. While it may not have the tactical sophistication of Ao Ashi or the intensity of Blue Lock, it has plenty of emotional moments and lovable characters.
Its focus on perseverance makes it one of the most accessible football anime for newcomers.
Days is a must-watch if you enjoy character-driven sports stories.
6. Whistle!
An underrated classic.
Before Blue Lock and Ao Ashi dominated the conversation, Whistle! was one of the genre’s most respected titles.
The story follows Sho Kazamatsuri, a small and overlooked player who transfers schools in pursuit of more playing time and a chance to improve.
The anime gives importance to hard work over natural genius and presents football as a sport where dedication can overcome physical limitations.
Though older than many modern recommendations, Whistle! still holds up as an inspiring sports anime.
This is the best for Fans of old-school sports anime.
7. Hungry Heart: Wild Striker
The forgotten football anime that deserves a comeback.
Created by the same mangaka behind the legendary boxing series Ashita no Joe, Hungry Heart: Wild Striker follows Kyosuke Kano as he tries to escape the shadow of his famous older brother.
The series balances comedy, drama, and football surprisingly well, while delivering memorable matches and character development.
Despite rarely appearing on modern recommendation lists, it remains one of the genre’s most enjoyable hidden gems.
You can give it a try if you are looking for something different from the usual recommendations.
