A new Warcraft III campaign, 23 years later
Blizzard has released Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom, the first new Warcraft III campaign since The Frozen Throne launched in 2003.
The expansion was announced and released at BlizzCon 2026, giving fans a new chapter in one of gaming’s most influential real-time strategy franchises.
The campaign explores the aftermath of Arthas’s return to Lordaeron and the rise of the Forsaken, filling in the story between Warcraft III and the early days of World of Warcraft.
Story and setting
The story begins in the ruins of Lordaeron, a kingdom devastated by the Scourge. As the undead survivors struggle to escape the Lich King’s control, they must establish a new home and determine what it means to be Forsaken.
Players will encounter familiar Warcraft characters, including Sylvanas Windrunner, Arthas, Kel’Thuzad, Varimathras, Putress, and members of the Scarlet Crusade.
The campaign also introduces new characters, including Garek Bandarion and Dark Ranger Anya, whose stories are tied to the founding of the Undercity.
The Last Days of Lordaeron
The expansion opens with a prologue campaign covering the final days of Lordaeron. It provides additional context for the kingdom’s fall and sets up the events of the main Forsaken story.
The Forsaken Kingdom
The main campaign follows the Forsaken as they build their new society beneath the ruins of Lordaeron. It explores the founding of the Undercity, the faction’s struggle for independence, and the conflicts that shape its future.
Gameplay and campaign features
Forsaken Kingdom retains the real-time strategy foundations of Warcraft III and introduces a more character-focused campaign structure.
Blizzard said it’s a single-player RPG-inspired adventure, drawing inspiration from The Frozen Throne’s Rexxar campaign.

A new single-player adventure
The campaign combines classic RTS gameplay with a more open, exploration-driven structure inspired by Warcraft III’s RPG-style missions.
Forsaken Paladin hero
A new neutral Forsaken Paladin hero unit is included with the expansion and is available for multiplayer at no additional cost.

Should you play the expansion?
The return of a new Warcraft III campaign is significant for RTS fans. The original Warcraft III helped establish the storytelling and hero-driven strategy mechanics that influenced Blizzard’s later games, including World of Warcraft.
Forsaken Kingdom gives you a chance to revisit that style of campaign while exploring an important but previously underdeveloped part of Warcraft lore: the transformation of Lordaeron into the Undercity and the early history of the Forsaken.
For longtime fans, the expansion is a major return to Warcraft III’s single-player storytelling. With its focus on the Forsaken, the fall of Lordaeron, and the founding of the Undercity, it expands one of Warcraft’s most recognizable storylines.
